  • Bahama Village, in the westernmost portion of the city, was a neighborhood comprised of Black Bahamians and Black Cubans, Chinese, and other groups of color since the 1800s. In this exhibition, their history and stories are woven together through various events that shaped the Black and Indigenous cultures of Key West. “Bahama Village: Relics of a Fading Community" contains never-before-on-view objects that tell the inspiring history, culture and contributions of the island’s Black residents. Located at the society's Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.

  • The Florida Keys Council of the Arts' Connections Project mural road show is underway in the Lower Keys. This year's mosaic of 300 small paintings by Keys artists celebrates the Keys' unique history and bicentennial with the theme "Pirates to Pineapples in Paradise - 200 Years in Monroe County." The mural will be on display at the Artists in Paradise Gallery at 221 Key Deer Blvd. in Big Pine Key through April 14.

  • Key West’s “Roaring Hot Jazz” band presents “Legends of Swing” on Saturday, April 1st. The night begins with a tribute to Django Reinhardt–the father of Gypsy Jazz– before moving into a 1940’s Benny Goodman-style quintet with hits from the swing era. This dynamic evening will culminate in a special tribute to New Orleans and Sidney Bechet – the grandfather of improvisational jazz – with an eight-piece traditional jazz brass band.   • Join the History of Diving Museum, dive historians, and NAUI for Vintage Dive Weekend, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jules' Undersea Lodge to learn about vintage diving techniques with above water demonstrations and below water experiences. For $75, certified divers can embark on an underwater tour in the lagoon around the facility, using a double-hose regulator as seen in Sea Hunt and Jacques Cousteau’s Silent World. The underwater tour includes the chance to enter the lodge habitat and meet Dr. Joseph Dituri, who is in residence during his 100-day undersea research project. The weekend offers plenty of activities for all ages, with landslide passes available for $15. All activities take place at Jules’ Undersea Lodge, 51 Shoreland Drive, bayside in Key Largo.

  • Guest lecturer Bob Rich is Senior Chairman of Rich Products Corp. and Chairman Emeritus of Cleveland Clinic. He was first exposed to the art of storytelling around campfires in northern Ontario. Growing up reading Hemingway, Melville and Cervantes inspired him to write. Living on the shores of Lake Erie and the Florida Keys provides him with a wealth of his own tales to tell. He is the author of five books "Fish Fights", "The Fishing Club", "The Right Angle", "Secrets of the Delphi Café", and "Looking Through Water", a novel being filmed now as the movie "Blood Knot" starring Michael Douglas.   • Inspired by "Confessional" by Tennessee Williams, Hurricane Alaina’s "I Confess" brings to light the things that we fear about ourselves, but often have in common with our neighbor. The result is exciting, funny, devastating and cathartic. For the Key West incarnation of her piece, Hurricane Alaina, co-producer of "The Tennessee Williams Project" weaves confessions from locals into her existing script. The philosophy of "I Confess" is that everyone has a secret, and the artists on stage are relying on the audience to hear the messages, in order to release them.   • To kick off Earth Day weekend, Mote Marine Laboratory is hosting the “Youth Making Ripples” International Youth Film Festival on Friday evening at the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary Eco-Discovery Center at 35 E. Quay Rd. in Key West. The film competition that debuted in 2014 is open to kindergarten through college students from around the world to display their creative talents to serve as a voice for our oceans. The films, all five minutes or less, range in topics from local marine threats or concerns to a specific call to action for marine conservation. Doors open for the event at 5 p.m., followed at 5:30 p.m. by a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Mote’s updated coral restoration exhibit inside the center, followed by the film festival at 6 p.m. in the center’s theater. Admission is free.

  • The annual Conch Republic Drag Race is a playful parody of auto racing where entrants swap high-speed cars for high-heeled shoes and female drag “ah-tire” while dashing along an improvised racetrack. The race is to take place in the 700 block of Key West's "main drag," Duval Street and is free for spectators. The race runs from 3 to 4 p.m. with party central at the Bourbon Street Pub.

  • The Key Largo Community Preservation Foundation hosts its inaugural Earth Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rowell's Waterfront Park, mile marker 104.5 bayside in Key Largo. Attendees can explore exhibits from Upper Keys environmental and educational non-profit organizations and schools. Attractions are to include interactive activities and information from Mote Marine Laboratory, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, the I.CARE coral reef restoration group, MarineLab Environmental Education Center and Island Dolphin Care, which will have a touch tank filled with sea stars, sea urchins and hermit crabs. Food vendors are to be on hand as well. The event is free to attend.

  • The Key West Southernmost Runners' 25th annual Earth Day 5k Run/Walk takes place Saturday at Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park at the end of Southard St. The start and finish line is near the U.S .Coast Guard Cutter Ingham Maritime Museum. Proceeds from the race benefit the Conch Republic Marine Army, a local non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to cleaning and restoring the shallow mangrove habitats of the Florida Keys. Registration is $25 per person (free for children under 5 with a parent). Participants can register online or in person at the race location from 4 to 6 p.m. April 21 and at 7 a.m. April 22 before the 8 a.m. race start.

Meet scientists and tour inside NASA's Blueflux aircraft that is being used to monitor mangrove ecosystems. Learn about the rich history of "the quest to explore under the sea" from History of Diving Museum, plus find information from other exhibitors including the National Park Service. To emphasize the connection between mangrove trees, which absorb atmospheric carbon, and the health of the Keys’ reefs and marine ecosystems, environmental organization Coastlove and FWC will lead a coastal cleanup and mangrove planting experience near the event site. Free to attend, but please register online, especially for the mangrove planting. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Marathon International Airport, 9850 Overseas Highway, bayside. Attendees will receive a discount adult admission pass to Crane Point to visit "Dive Into Art: Edge of the Sea" traveling exhibit on Earth Day.

  • Race World Offshore is excited to bring offshore racing back to Marathon and showcase the world’s best and fastest boats, in this kick-off to the 2023 APBA National Race Series. On Friday night fans are invited to join race teams and organizers for the free, Race World Offshore and Conch Republic kick-off party starting at 5:30 p.m. at Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters, 11710 Overseas Highway, bayside. Saturday and Sunday, race boats will navigate a new 5.6 mile course in the Gulf of Mexico alongside the recently renovated Old Seven Mile Bridge. There is free admission to watch the races both days from the pedestrian-friendly bridge, with one section reserved for VIP ticket holders. Fans also have access to boats and teams at the dry pit areas at Florida Keys Marathon International Airport and San Pablo Catholic Church. The wet pits are at Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club. Parking for the races is to be available at Marathon Community Park, 200 36th Street Ocean (MM 49), with shuttle service to Sunset Grille at the base of the bridge.   • The annual Conch Republic Bed Race, billed as “the most fun you can have in bed with your clothes on” is to trundle through downtown Key West Saturday at 3 p.m. as part of the 41st annual Conch Republic Days celebration. The race features decorated wheel-mounted beds, each propelled down Duval Street from Olivia to Southard streets. A team of four runners, some in outlandish costumes, is to race each decked-out bed while one fortunate rider lounges aboard. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bourbon Street Pub at 724 Duval Street. The competition is a fundraiser for the Sister Season Fund, providing financial assistance to hospitality and tourism workers in need.
