Hiking Turtleback Mountain Preserve: Ship Peak Loop

Thanks to the efforts of the San Juan Preservation Trust and the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank, you can explore the beautiful Turtleback Mountain Preserve and take in some of the most breathtaking views on Orcas Island.

Ship Peak is a moderate loop full of views and a summit starting at the south end of the preserve. You can hike the loop in either direction but this write-up takes you counterclockwise.

Starting from the trailhead on Wildrose Lane, follow the South Trail. In just under half a mile you will come to a fork, head right on the Morning Ridge Trail. In another half a mile you will reach the West Overlook trail. When you reach the top of the overlook take in the views and then continue forward on to the summit of Ship Peak, just past the Lost Oak trail. The summit is a very short worthwhile side trip from the loop.

Return back to the main path and follow the Lost Oak Trail down to the old road where you started your ascent. Turn right and continue to the trailhead.

Note: You can extend your adventure and explore more of the preserve by taking the Lost Oak Trail the other direction and continuing onto the Ridge Trail. Take a map and build your own route.
